In 2004 Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ made its debut in movie theatres. Churches were given advanced copies of the film to share with their congregations. We partnered with Torrey Pines Christian Church to watch the film together on a Friday night so we could engage in a group discussion following the film. It was a hard movie to watch. It felt like half the film focused on Jesus’ beating and crucifixion. We all knew that part of the story well, but turns out few of us had ever allowed ourselves to visualize what Jesus really experienced in those last hours. And maybe that was the point of the movie.
